Exactly 30 years since the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a major film company and introducing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but keeping viewers wondering how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Gang

The preview reveals the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the insignia pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.
